What We Believe

St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Westland, MI is a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) and adheres to all the doctrinal beliefs and teachings of that synod.

The Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) believes in the authority of the Bible as God’s inspired Word, the doctrine of salvation by grace alone through faith in Jesus Christ, and the importance of sharing the Gospel. WELS teaches that the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are means of grace, offering forgiveness and strengthening faith. The church also emphasizes the importance of living a Christ-centered life, loving one’s neighbor, and being faithful to God’s Word in all areas of life.
